Admit it or not, we all love apple pie but we’re not so into making crust. Thank heavens, there’s apple crumble! If you ask us, we think it’s wildly easier to assemble, and with the addition of carobs and pears, it is just as satisfying if not a lot better. We’re sharing our recipe below if you want to make it today. And if you have all the ingredients at home, dessert will be on the table in less than an hour! Each serving of warm crumble deserves a generous scoop of vanilla ice cream. It is non-negotiable, in our opinion!

Carob Apple Pear Spiced Crumble Recipe

INGREDIENTS

APPLE AND PEAR FILLING

  • 1.7 lbs (750 gms) Granny Smith apples, peeled, cored and diced
  • 1.7 lbs (750 gms) green pears, peeled, cored and diced
  • 1/3 cup (80 ml) The Australian Carob Co. Carob Syrup
  • 1 tsp ground cinnamon or 1/2 tsp cardamon
  • 1 tsp ground ginger
  • 1/2 tsp ground nutmeg
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 2 tbsps cornflour

CRUMBLE

  • 3/4 cup (120 gms) plain flour
  • 1/4 cup (25 gms) The Australian Carob Co. Roasted or Raw Carob Powder
  • 1/3 cup (75 gms) brown sugar
  • 2 tsp ground cinnamon or 1 tsp cardamon 
  • 2/3 cup (160 gms) unsalted vegan plant based butter, diced
  • 1/3 cup (80 ml) The Australian Carob Co. Carob Syrup
  • 1/2 cup (45 gms) rolled oats
  • 1/2 cup (40 gms) shredded coconut
  • 1/4 cup (40 gms) raw almonds, roughly chopped

INSTRUCTIONS

  • Preheat oven to 180°C (160°C fan-forced/ 350°F).
  • In a large mixing bowl combine apple, pears, carob syrup, cinnamon, ginger, nutmeg and vanilla together tossing until well combined. Place mixture in a large sauté pan over a high heat and cook for 5 minutes, stirring continuously until fruit is just tender. Remove from heat and allow to cool completely. Add cornflour, stirring to combine.
  • Meanwhile for the crumble, combine the flour, carob powder, sugar and cinnamon/cardamon together in a mixing bowl, stirring to combine. Add diced plant based butter and using clean fingertips, rub the butter into the flour mixture until mixture resembles coarse breadcrumbs. Add carob syrup, oats, coconut and almonds, rubbing mixture to combine.
  • Spoon cooled fruit mixture into a 1 1/2 liter (6 cup) baking dish and scatter crumble over the top. Place baking dish in preheated oven for 25 minutes or until crumble is golden.
  • Serve crumble with soy yogurt, or dairy-free vanilla ice cream.
